A very warm welcome to The Department of Social Studies which as of this day is characterized by historical transformation which started some years ago. Precisely before 1988, there was nothing like a department of social studies but there existed courses called SOS 001 and SOS 002 which there offered as general courses by students from the Schools of Science and Vocational/Technical Education. Economics and Language combination students.
In 1988 the first set of the students majoring in social studies combinations were admitted and a social studies unit was established within the Department of Social sciences. The units started with a population of about three hundred students (300) who combined social studies with a variety of other courses like Economics, History, Islamic Studies, Geography, English etc. The unit was headed by Dr. M Lawal.
By 1993, the unit was upgraded to a full fledged department, a status is presently maintains. Since its inception, first as a unit and later as a department, it has been headed at different times by different lecturers; all of whom have contributed tremendously towards the development of the department.
The programme is designed to achieve the following:
- Produce professionally and academically competent NCE Social Studies teacher for the Junior Secondary Schools.
- Prepare teachers who will inculcate in their pupils rational adjustment to their physical and social environment through acquisition of knowledge, attitudes, values, appreciations and skills necessary for developing social and civic responsibilities.
- Produce students who are capable of benefiting from further education in social studies and other related areas.
The Department of Social Studies has excelled in so many endeavours. These include both academic and social life. It has produced several Award winning graduating students.
Similarly, it is on record that for the past fifteen years, it has been winning Deanship Cup in both male and female soccer, among others.
